Q&A
What’s your favourite book? Hardest answer, ever! Too many to list but here are two I recommend for a good laugh: Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Also, New Cardiff by Charles Webb.
Who’s your favourite Canadian author? I have two answers: Margaret Atwood and L.M. Montgomery. I must add a third here: Mona Houle, a memoirist. But I have many favourites. Truly, too many to list!
What book have you read multiple times? It’s probably geeky to say, but every grammar book I could get my hands on.
What book haven’t you gotten around to reading? I haven’t finished reading Henry James’s works. An anthology of his sits on my shelf, staring at me.
Why did you become an editor? My knack for details. I suppose it was while working at the college where I realized I had taken my skills for granted. Having always loved writing, editing seemed a natural extension. I get paid to read. Hello!
Do you still offer English tutoring? On occasion but editing and writing take up most of my time now.
What tools do you use to edit? MS Word. Style guides. My brain, which I cover with pink headphones with cat ears.
Do you have any favourite editing tools? The dictionary and thesaurus. And a closed door.
What is your degree in? A triple minor: Anthropology, film studies, and of course, English. You’d be surprised at how complementary they are.
